The Life Saver Fund
The Life Saver Fund is reserved for animals that need extra or emergency medical care or behavioral resources prior to adoption. Having this fund available ahead of time means that when an animal comes in that needs a little extra TLC, we have the money already set aside to help the animal immediately instead of fundraising separately for each case while the animal waits for care.
Be a hero!
The Life Saver Fund can cover long-term treatment of an illness, extensive testing to diagnose disease, surgeries needed to improve quality of life, emergency procedures to stabilize, or intense behavioral training. The Life Saver Fund is instrumental in allowing the Refuge to continue taking in animals from local and out-of-state partner groups. Many animals from ACCT Philly (animal control) or high euthanasia areas of the country are out of options and the Life Saver Fund gives us the ability to care for medically emergent animals while we find the perfect people to care for them. Hamlet and Ophelia's Life Saver Story!
From the moment Hamlet and Ophelia arrived at the shelter, we knew they would be a special pair of cats. These two buds play and cuddle together all the time, becoming distressed if separated. Ophelia is especially affectionate, often seeking out Hamlet for headbutts and grooming sessions!
On arrival, Hamlet had non-functional, underdeveloped eyes that were constantly exposed to infection due to their shape and size. After careful examination by our medical staff, it was determined that he would need a bilateral eye enucleation, meaning both eyes would need to be removed. In response to his diagnosis, our community leapt into action, quickly raising more than enough money for the Life Saver Fund to cover Hamlet’s medical costs!
Hamlet has now healed beautifully, helped along by his devoted sister Ophelia. He was immediately friendlier and happier once his discomfort was relieved. Without the support of our community, Hamlet and Ophelia would not be happy and healthy in their forever home!
