Every year, National Feed a Shelter Pet Week shines a spotlight on a simple but essential need: making sure shelter animals have enough nutritious food to thrive. At Morris Animal Refuge, this week is a meaningful reminder of just how much proper nutrition impacts the health, happiness, and recovery of the animals in our care.

Why Feeding Shelter Pets Is So Important

Feeding a shelter full of animals isn’t as simple as filling a bowl. Every pet who comes through our doors has unique nutritional needs:

  • Puppies and kittens require specialized diets to fuel their rapid growth and development.
  • Senior pets often need softer food or specially formulated diets to support aging bodies and health conditions.
  • Animals recovering from illness or surgery need nutrient-dense meals to aid healing and regain strength.
  • Pets who arrive underweight or malnourished require extra care and monitoring to help them get back to full health.

Providing the right food isn’t just about keeping bellies full, it’s a critical piece of the overall care and rehabilitation we provide to every animal, every single day.

How Your Support Helps

Each month, Morris Animal Refuge cares for approximately 100 animals, and food is one of our most essential ongoing needs. Your donations directly fund the meals that keep our shelter pets healthy while they wait for their forever homes.

This week, thanks to a generous donor, every gift made will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $3,500, meaning your contribution goes twice as far to support the animals who need it most. Here’s how your gift can help:

  • $25 – Helps feed shelter pets for one day
  • $50 – Helps feed a litter of kittens
  • $100 – Helps provide food for multiple animals in foster care
  • $250 – Helps stock shelter food supplies during kitten season

Ways to Help

  • Donate here to support our Feed a Shelter Pet Week fundraiser and have your gift matched.
  • Drop off physical donations of pet food or treats, our animals especially love Hill’s and Friskies!
  • Spread the word by sharing this cause with friends and family who love animals as much as you do.

No shelter pet should go hungry while waiting for their new beginning. Thank you for helping us keep every bowl full and every animal cared for during this important week and beyond.
