Give Cats the Habitats They Deserve

Each year, Morris Animal Refuge cares for approximately 1,200 animals, and nearly 85 percent are cats. While our mission has remained constant for more than 150 years, parts of our shelter infrastructure have aged beyond what today’s animal welfare standards require.

If you have visited the shelter, you may have noticed that many of our cat kennels were worn and frequently breaking. Doors no longer closed properly, some units had become unusable, and the design made it difficult to keep cats comfortable, healthy, and stress-free while they waited for adoption.

Because housing quality directly impacts animal well-being, we made the decision to invest in brand-new cat condos designed around modern feline welfare standards.

Thanks to generous support from the Foxwynd Foundation and the Josephine and Evelyn S. Smith Foundation, this long-needed upgrade is becoming a reality.

Designed for Health, Comfort, and Adoption Success

Our new cat condos provide:

• • Separate living and litter areas to reduce stress and illness

• • Privacy spaces where cats can hide and feel safe

• • Larger housing that meets ASV welfare standards

• • Durable, easy-to-clean materials built for years of daily care

These improvements mean healthier cats, reduced illness, and calmer animals who show better in the adoption environment. Simply put, better housing helps cats get adopted faster.

While grant funding covered most of the project, there is still an opportunity for our community to help complete this transformational upgrade for the cats who call Morris home each year.

• • $100 – Provide a Kitty Bathroom Kit with litter, a scoop, and mat for one condo to keep our cats healthy and clean

• • $500 – Fund a full condo setup, including bedding, litter, and enrichment, to give cats a comfortable and stimulating home
