Creating a Safe Space for Your Pets During Loud Events

Share this story with your friends!

While loud noises like fireworks, thunderstorms, or nearby construction might be part of life, they can be frightening and overwhelming for our pets. Sudden bangs, rumbling, or unfamiliar sounds can trigger stress, anxiety, and even dangerous behaviors like running away or hiding in unsafe places. Fortunately, there are simple ways to create a safe, calming environment for your pets during these events

Why Do Pets React to Loud Noises?

Loud, unexpected noises can trigger your pet’s natural fight-or-flight response. Their hearing is far more sensitive than ours, so what sounds loud to us can be overwhelming to them. Even pets that usually seem confident can become startled, anxious, or disoriented by fireworks, thunderstorms, or construction sounds nearby.

Setting Up a Safe Space at Home
One of the best ways to ease your pet’s stress is by providing a quiet, secure space where they can feel safe and comfortable. Here’s some tips on to set one up:

  • Choose a Familiar, Quiet Room: A bedroom, bathroom, or other quiet space in your home works best. Close windows and curtains to help muffle sounds and block out flashing lights.
  • Add Soft Bedding and Familiar Items: Fill the area with cozy blankets, their bed, and favorite toys. Familiar scents can be especially comforting during stressful times. If you have a cat, make sure they have access to a clean litter box in their safe room.
  • Play Soothing Sounds: Turn on the TV, play calming music, or use a white noise machine to help mask the frightening noises outside.
  • Cover Their Crate or Hideout: If your pet enjoys spending time in a crate or under furniture, you can cover the area with a blanket to make it feel more den-like and secure. Just be sure they can come and go freely.

Other Ways to Help Keep Your Pet Calm
In addition to creating a safe space, there are other ways you can help your pet feel more at ease during loud events:

  • Stay Calm Yourself: Animals often pick up on our emotions. Staying calm and speaking softly can help reassure them that they are safe.
  • Use Calming Products: There are pet-safe calming sprays, diffusers, or anxiety wraps that can help ease stress. For more severe anxiety, speak to your veterinarian about safe calming medications. You can also provide enriching treats that may help to keep your pet distracted such as puzzle toys, lick matts, wet treats, chewy toys, and more.
  • Keep Them Indoors: Whenever possible, keep pets inside during fireworks, storms, or heavy construction periods. If they do need to go outside, be sure they are leashed, harnessed, and microchipped. If they have a history of running, you may want to double leash them at two places on their harnesses and ensure that they cannot slide out of their harness.

Plan Ahead for Known Events
If you know fireworks or storms are expected, try to prepare early. Set up their safe space in advance, and make sure they’ve had a chance to exercise and go to the bathroom beforehand. A tired pet is often a calmer pet!
