While fireworks can be an enjoyable display on some holidays, they are often harmful and stressful for our animals. If you plan to celebrate the New Year with some fireworks, here’s how to keep your pets calm and safe in their environment.
- The loud noises and flashing lights are the primary reason why pets get so scared of fireworks. If you’re outdoors with your pet when they hear fireworks go off, your pet’s fight-or-flight response can be triggered and they could run away scared. Many animals can become lost this way, which is why it’s always important to keep them leashed, collared, and microchipped if you plan on having them outdoors during a holiday event. A harness might be extra helpful as well.
- It’s best to leave your pet indoors if you know there will be fireworks going off in the area, preferably with the TV on or some other kind of noise to soften the impact of the fireworks on your pet’s hearing.
- If you find that your pet is scared of fireworks, there are calming medications you can give them to help keep them docile and relaxed. Ask your preferred vet for the best medication to give them if this is necessary.
