This year, we’re expecting record temperatures during the winter season. We care about our pets as much as we care about ourselves, and one key thing to know as a pet-owner is that if you’re cold, they’re cold! They may have a built-in fluffy coat to protect them, but most animals still feel the weather as much as we do. Here are some cold weather safety tips to help keep your pets protected this holiday season.
- The first step is to make sure your pets are up to date on wellness exams and vaccinations! Just like humans, being healthy can keep you from getting sick during the winter.
- Know the limits of your pets! If you have a dog with a shorter coat, keep your winter walks brief, and dress your pup up in a sweater or coat if necessary. Booties, too! Pets with health problems are at a higher risk in extreme weather. (For cats, we recommend you simply keep them indoors at all times!)
- Provide choices for sleeping arrangements! Your pets may have a bed they prefer, but it never hurts to let them know there are other options if they’d like to curl up elsewhere. They will go where they can find the most warmth and feel the most comfortable – if you don’t mind, that can sometimes be in bed with you!
- Check the paws. A dog’s paw pads can quickly become cracked or bleeding when exposed to too much cold. Make sure the hair between your dog’s toes is trimmed neatly to avoid gathering ice and snow on walks.
- Always collar and chip your pets! If a pet becomes lost in the winter, ensuring they are microchipped can help you reunite with them.
- For outdoor pets (cats especially), provide shelter. Make sure that the shelter is warm and enclosed, and the animal will have access to non-frozen water. Many stray and outdoor cats know how to survive on their own in winter, but it never hurts to give them a little extra help!
- When traveling, never leave your pet unattended in the car! Same as you shouldn’t leave an animal alone in a heated car during summer, you should never leave them alone in a car during winter. The same risks to your pet’s life are involved – they could overheat with the car on and the heater running, or they could freeze when the car is off!
- Be aware of potential harmful substances outside, such as antifreeze or de-icers. If walking your pet in an area where someone has treated the sidewalk or street, always check their paws after, and wipe them down when you return home to lessen the risk of your pet ingesting any substances that may be stuck to their paws.
- Pet-proof your home. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire sounds nice, but it can be dangerous for your pets! If leaving your pets home alone, never leave any candles burning or fires lit. Turn off space heaters, as they can cause burns or be knocked over by your pet when left unattended.
- Be prepared for an emergency! If the power goes out during a winter storm, ensure that you have extra supplies for your pet as well as yourself. This includes food, water, and medicine, and blankets to keep your pet warm. You never know what might happen, and it’s always best to be over-prepared rather than under!
