Celebrating an extraordinary 150-year journey, the Morris Animal Refuge at 1242 Lombard Street proudly stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of its visionary founder, Elizabeth Morris (1827 – 1907). In 1874, fueled by compassion and foresight, Elizabeth established the Morris Refuge Association for Homeless and Suffering Animals, a pioneering initiative that blazed the trail for animal welfare in America.

From its humble beginnings in a small building, the Refuge has evolved into a powerhouse of compassion, achieving a remarkable 98% save rate and facilitating the annual adoption of over 1,200 animals. Through innovative programs such as the Community Cat Program, which has successfully spayed/neutered and returned over 500 community cats, and the transformative Philly Pets Program, which provides veterinary care, education, and support to pet owners in underserved areas, the Refuge continues to set the standard for progressive animal care.

As we commemorate the Refuge’s 150th anniversary, it stands not only as a beacon of hope but as a cornerstone of animal welfare advocacy. Major improvements have been made to our shelter including the implementation of enrichment and training programs, comprehensive medical exams including full blood work panels and dental work. 

This milestone is not just a reflection on the Refuge’s rich history; it heralds a future marked by continued compassion, innovation, and unwavering advocacy for the welfare of animals.
