Kitten Season - How To Help!

Kitten Season -- How To Help!

Too Much of a Cute Thing.

(Little kittens in a line)

Kitten season is coming! Sounds adorable – who doesn't like kittens? – but it's the worst time of year for cats and shelters. As the weather warms up, unaltered cats – owned, stray, and feral – being breeding, producing litter after litter until the cold returns. Countless kittens start pouring into shelters and rescues across the country. Soon everyone is overwhelmed and out of space.

But you can help these featherweight felines!  Sure, we're working as hard as we can, but the most important part of our lifesaving efforts ... is you! Here are a few things you can do for Philly's cats and kittens.

How You Can Help

Foster
Mom Cat Sophie and little kitten ChaunceyWith kittens flooding in daily, there simply isn't enough room for them all. Many are simply too young to do well in a shelter environment. Even in the best of cases, a shelter just isn't the ideal place for little cats to grow up. This is where you come in! Foster parents are absolutely vital to help these irresistible babies. They're needed for all kinds of cats, from mothers with nursing kittens – where you let mom take care of things and simply provide a loving home and socialization – to orphaned newborns who require round-the-clock specialized care. You can get to enjoy the cuddly little furballs without making a life-long commitment – and with the knowledge that you're helping save lives.

(Grace and her babies)Volunteer
At the moment we are most in need of volunteers for events and for our PetSmart, Pet Valu and Petco offsite adoption centers, in order to get our cats and kittens the widest possible exposure beyond the Refuge doors. But more opportunities are opening up, for a wide range of skills and time commitments, including flexible/at home options. Want to help out? Find out more and apply online - we need you!

Donate
Another way to help is by providing necessary kitten-care supplies, for use here at the Refuge and in our foster homes. Important items include:

  • KMR kitten formula(Little kittens)
  • Bottles for feeding kittens
  • Blankets
  • Canned kitten food
  • Dry kitten food
  • Cat beds
  • Heating pads
  • Toys

Check out our Amazon wish list. Monetary donations are always welcome too!

Spay/Neuter
Spaying and neutering is the heart of fighting pet overpopulation. Did you know that cats can become pregnant as young as five months of age? That they can be spayed or neutered as early as 2 to 3 months old? And that getting your cat fixed can have important health and behavior benefits? The Refuge is happy to be able to help through our low-cost spay/neuter program, thanks to your donations and our participating vets. Learn more – and spread the word! You can find even more local resources at spayneuterphilly.com.

Whether they were born under a bush or in a bedroom, whether they're the offspring of tough feral survivors or pampered housecats, whether they're scampering around foster homes or waiting at the Refuge, our kittens are all looking for one thing: a forever home. (Our older cats too!) Are you ready? Don't delay – see some of our awesome adoptables and apply online today!
