Wanted: Veterinary Technician - Part Time

We are seeking a trained part-time Veterinary Technician (VT) to assists in providing spay/neuter surgery and preventive and basic medical care to animals entering our shelter.  This position is also responsible for cleaning the surgery and prep rooms and preparing surgical packs.  The schedule is 6-8 hours per day/ 3 days per week. 2 days are working with the vet in surgery and on exams, and the third day is for preparing surgical packs, cleaning and inventory management.  Morris is a small, open-admission shelter with old facilities but we make the most of all we have!

The VT is responsible for the daily care of surgery patients, management, and administration of anesthetic/analgesic agents and other medications.  The person in this position must also handle flow of animals through spay/neuter and recovery, as well as preparing the clinic for the following day’s surgery load. Morris Animal Refuge, the first in the United States to care for cats, was founded by Elizabeth Morris, one of our nation's pioneers in animal welfare, in 1874.  In more than 135 years, no animal has ever been turned away from our door.  The Refuge continues to operate today in Center City Philadelphia at its home at 1242 Lombard Street. Shelter Manager Job Description

This full time position is bottom line responsible for the daily operation of the shelter, including animal care, adoption, fostering, and a team of seven employees. This position is under the direct supervision of the Director of Operations. The right candidate will be well organized and detail oriented but able to think strategically and delegate work as needed to develop employees. Professionalism and solution-oriented approach are necessary. Responsibilities include:

Animal Care
o Manage a team of five animal care attendants with the help of one Assistant Shelter Manager
o Creation of all animal care protocols including safety, feeding, cleaning, administering of medicine, etc.
o Implementation of animal care protocols, including staff training and follow up
o Perform and manage intake exams for all animals entering the shelter
o Manage the performance of behavioral assessments of each animal and coding into our tiered system
o Keep Petpoint updated with all information about each animal, including exams, vaccinations, and outcomes
o Work with our Veterinarian to coordinate spay/neuter surgeries and medical exams

Adoption and Client Services
o Manage the Adoption Coordinator and other staff to perform adoptions accurately and with all paperwork and Petpoint filled out correctly
o Model and enforce good customer service with potential adopters, volunteers, etc.

Foster/Puppy Program
o Coordinate transfer of animals in and out of the Refuge as needed
o Recruit and coordinate foster families
o Build long term successful relationships with foster families

Staff Management
o Scheduling, tracking of Payroll hours, time off, etc.
o Performing regular employee reviews

Qualifications
o At least 1 year experience working in a shelter environment with both cats and dogs of all sizes
o At least 2 years management/supervising experience
o Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, and Petpoint
o Good communication skills and the ability to maintain professionalism under pressure
o Extremely well organized and be a team player and play nice with peers
o Prepared for leadership and to hit the ground running
o Ability to think strategically and understand the big picture of the Refuge, its mission, and the role it plays in the community

Position Type
Full time, 37.5 hrs/week. Must have Saturday and Sunday availability.
